BRONX – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team earned an impressive victory over Monroe University – New Rochelle JV by a score of 25-3, at Roberto Clemente State Park, on Friday afternoon.
Monroe – Bronx extends its winning streak to nine games.
The Express (13-7) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first thanks to a two-run homer by Izayah Mercedes.
In the bottom frame, Monroe – Bronx had runners on first and second, one out.
Adrian Nunez stepped up to the plate. He took the first pitch he saw and drilled the ball over the fence in right field for a three-run shot to catapult the Express to a 3-2 lead. That began an 11-run frame for the home team.
Another highlight of Monroe – Bronx's productive inning was Nunez coming up again, this time with the bases loaded, a lining a bases-clearing triple through the right side. In the at-bat prior,
Elijah Andino walked with the bases loaded to tack on a run. Later,
Anthony Sanchez concluded the scoring in the first with an RBI double to pad the Express' cushion to 11-2.
After the Mustangs JV (1-9) got one run back in the top of the second, the Express answered with nine more in the bottom half.
David Echavarria put a cap on the scoring for the second inning with a three-run home run to center which gave Monroe – Bronx a 20-3 hold.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sanchez belted a two-run round tripper to make it 22-3 in favor of the home team. The Express added three more runs to extend the benefit to 25-3. That ended up being the final score.
"Absolutely tremendous job by our offense after being down by two in the first and never looking back," Express Head Coach
Bryan Diaz said.
Nunez went a perfect 3-for-3 for the Express, including a double. He was just a single shy of the cycle. He also scored four runs, drove in six, and drew a walk.
Robert Herrera also had a strong game for Monroe – Bronx as he collected two hits, scored twice, and had two RBIs.
Pablo Aquino had three runs, a hit, two runs batted in, and a pair of walks.
Derek Lebron hit an RBI double, scored two times, drove in a pair, and stole two bases. Sanchez went 3-for-4, scored twice, and drove in four runs.
Also helping the Express was
Devyn Rolle who doubled. Echavarria scored three times and had two hits.
Juan Carlos Salcedo had an RBI single and crossed home plate two times.
Abraham Joaquin Taveras went 2-for-3 and scored three times. Andino scored twice and walked just as many times, including one base on balls with the bases loaded that earned him an RBI.
Samuel Hernandez singled and scored.
On the mound for Monroe – Bronx,
Luis Green started the game and earned his third win of the season as he struck out four batters, surrendered four hits, gave up three runs, and walked two batters in three innings pitched.
Railyn Uceta retired all three batters he faced in his inning of work out of the bullpen, including one strikeout.
Yaxiel Morales De Jesús struck out two batters, gave up no walks, and did not allow a hit in one scoreless inning pitched.
For the Mustangs JV, Yerik Ricour started the game and took the loss.
It's a quick turnaround for the Express as they will come right back to Roberto Clemente State Park on Saturday for a Region 15 doubleheader against Borough of Manhattan Community College. First pitch of the twin bill is set for noon.

There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
