Express Men's Volleyball Defeats Harcum in Straight Sets; Adrian Martinez Honored After the Match

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 10 Monroe University – Bronx men's volleyball team defeated Harcum College in straight sets for the second time this year on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21, and 25-20. 

The Express (8-5) never trailed at any point in the opening set. Harcum (4-5) had a 20-18 advantage in the second game but a kill by Fidel Ramirez sparked a 7-1 run for the Express to close the stanza and give the Blue and Gold a 2-0 lead in the match.

Monroe – Bronx fell behind by a score of 18-17 in the third frame. Darren Lopez kick-started Monroe's comeback with a kill which began a match-ending 8-2 run for the Express. An attack error by the Bears clinched the three-set victory for Monroe and its eighth win of the season. 

For the Express, Ramirez led the attack with six kills. Lopez, Steven Francis Ouellet, and J'Adon George each slammed five kills. Lopez scored six service aces and added four digs. Ouellet compiled two aces and just as many blocks. George provided a trio of blocks. Johnnovan Reyes helped with 14 assists, while David Garcia recorded nine helpers and four defensive bumps. Edwin Ortega added three successful attacks and five blocks. Pedro Bello Lopez anchored the defense with five digs.

After the match, the Express honored sophomore libero Adrian Martinez with a ceremony. His teammates and coaches appreciate all the work and effort Martinez provided for the program.

The Express will compete in two Region 15 matches at Nassau Community College on Saturday. Monroe will battle Borough of Manhattan at 12 p.m. and then take on Hostos Community College at approximately 1:30 p.m. 

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
