Express Men's Soccer Has Record-Setting Performance in Region 15 Win Over Dutchess on Sophomore Day

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team delivered a dominant performance on Tuesday afternoon, shutting out Dutchess Community College, 10-0, at Flowers Park. The victory improves the Express to 9-4-1 overall and 9-2-0 in Region 15 play.

Oumar Barry opened the scoring just 1:22 into the contest, finishing a pass from Maynor Palacios. Barry struck again in the 12th minute off an assist from Hassane Diallo before completing his hat trick in the 25th minute with another assist from Palacios.

Barry now has 15 goals and 36 points this season which sets the program's all-time single-season records for goals and points. The previous marks were set by Mamadou Diombera (14 goals and 34 points) in 2018.

Monroe continued its first-half offensive surge with six additional goals. Mamadou Top scored in the 26th minute off a Palacios assist, followed by Kadiff Wolfe's penalty kick in the 28th minute.

Abdoulaye Sarr then took over, scoring four consecutive goals between the 35th and 43rd minutes. Palacios assisted the first, Barry set up the second, Enzo Jarry assisted the third, and Brandon Loyola provided the helper for the fourth to give Monroe a commanding 9-0 halftime lead.

Palacios' four assists in the match are the most in a single game in team history. The previous record was three helpers done by several Express players over the years.

Sarr's four goals tie him for the No. 1 spot on the program's all-time single-game scoring record. He joins four other Express players on the prestigious list.

Mouhamed Kane added the lone goal of the second half in the 55th minute, finishing a pass from Jeffrey Juca to complete the 10-0 victory.

The Express overwhelmed Dutchess (2-8, 1-8 Region 15) offensively, outshooting the Falcons, 44-8, and putting 28 shots on goal. Monroe also earned seven corner kicks while limiting Dutchess to none.

Monroe's defense held firm throughout the contest, allowing just three shots on goal. The Dutchess goalkeeper William Ricci made 11 saves, while teammate Lance Yupanqui stopped seven shots.

The Express' Kimany Arzu turned aside two shots to earn the win in net. Moises Cruz stopped one shot on goal for the Blue and Gold in his collegiate debut. Raymond Romero played in goal for the first 17:47 of the second half.

Barry finished with three goals to become the program's single-season scoring leader, while Sarr recorded four to earn a tie for the most in a game in team history. Palacios contributed a program all-time single-match best four assists.

Prior to the match, Monroe – Bronx honored Palacios, Diallo, Brian Jacinto, Loyola, Romero, Arzu, Top, and Sarr with a sophomore day ceremony.

"First of all, I'm very happy with the three points, especially on a day when we had the opportunity to celebrate our sophomores who will be graduating this year," Express Head Coach Jose Hernandez said. "I'm really glad everything went well with the ceremony and that they were able to enjoy such a special moment with their teammates and the Monroe family."

Hernandez added: "From a competitive standpoint, it was important for us to get back on the winning track after two tough losses in very close games where we felt we could have gotten better results. Those experiences were difficult, but they also gave us valuable lessons. Sometimes adversity is exactly what you need to grow stronger, both individually and as a team. We have to learn from those moments, keep fighting, and continue working toward our goals. I'm proud of the response from the group, and now we need to keep building on this performance and move forward together."

The Express will close out the Region 15 regular season schedule on Thursday, October 15 against Suffolk County Community College. The crucial regional matchup will take place at Ammerman Campus Soccer Field, in Selden N.Y., beginning at 3:30 p.m.
