TRENTON, N.J. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team suffered a setback to NJCAA Division II nationally ranked No. 3 Mercer County Community College, 6-1, at Mercer Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon.
Monroe's defense got off to a great start during the afternoon, holding an elite NJCAA Division II team scoreless during the first 38:21 of the contest and to just one goal over 52 minutes into the match.
The lone goal scorer for Monroe (1-2) was
Jason Chunchi as he buried a shot that went into the back of the net off his free kick from 25 yards out during the 62
nd minute. That cut the Express' deficit to 2-1.
Mercer (6-0) displayed strong execution at the restart as Daniel Garcia fed the ball to Camilo Osorio who had a breakaway and beat Monroe's goalkeeper, one on one, just 10 seconds after the Express sliced their disadvantage in half.
The wheels fell off for Monroe after Osorio's goal as the Vikings added three more tallies during the final 11:30 of the contest to earn the win.
In net for the Express,
Angel Grijalva made four saves during the afternoon. His counterpart, Ignacio Pacheco, claimed the win.
Earlier in the afternoon, Mercer scored its first tally via a penalty kick from Adrian Garcia with 6:39 left in the opening half. Jesse Van Den Berg scored a goal during the 53
rd minute, his first of three, which made it 2-0 in favor of the home team. He also added an assist later in the game.
The Vikings outshot the Express, 28-3, during the contest. Each team took a corner kick.
Monroe – Bronx will battle local rival Bronx Community College in a Region 15 matchup at Ohio Field on Tuesday afternoon. The action will begin at 4 p.m.

There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
