Express Baseball Routs Nassau to Remain Undefeated in Region 15 Play

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team continued its strong regional play on Wednesday afternoon by defeating Nassau Community College, 13-1, at Mitchel Athletic Complex. The Express extend their unbeaten Region 15 record to 9-0 (10-12 overall) and have won 10 of their last 12 games.

Jayden Moya had a strong performance on the mound for Monroe as he fanned nine hitters and gave up just one run in seven innings pitched to earn the complete-game victory.

"It was an exceptional pitching performance by Jayden Moya," Express Head Coach Bryan Diaz said. "Great job by the offense with situational hitting. Overall, a great all-around team win."

Monroe – Bronx's lineup kicked off the scoring in the top of the second inning as the Blue and Gold plated three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Giovanny Flores, to give the Express the lead for good.

Flores struck again in the top of the fourth by producing an RBI single to pad Monroe's lead to 4-0.

The Express continued their scoring blitz in the top of the fourth as Yan Ortiz Torres drilled an RBI double to extend his team's benefit to 5-0. Then, Christopher Marlin, Adrian Nunez, and Anthony Sanchez each delivered run-scoring singles to inflate Monroe's cushion to 8-0.

After the Express scored two more runs in the top of the fifth, the Lions (9-6, 8-1 Region 15) got on the board in the bottom frame as Ariel Nunez hit a sacrifice fly to score Michael Jazylo which turned out to be Nassau's only run of the game.

The Lions' momentum did not last as in the top of the seventh, Marlin's two-run single highlighted a three-run inning which extended Monroe's lead to 13-1 and that ended up being the final score.

For the Express at the plate, Adrian Nunez went 4-for-5. Pablo Aquino went 3-for-5, stole three bases, and scored a trio of runs. Edwin Minaya Jr. hit two singles, a double, drove in a run, stole a bag, and scored. Robert Herrera singled, doubled, added an RBI, stole a base, and crossed home plate twice. Marlin provided four RBIs, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Flores scored two runs of his own. Ortiz Torres walked, stole a base, and scored three runs. Sanchez compiled a duo of RBIs. Nomar Rodriguez earned a base on balls.

The Express and Lions will continue their four-game series with a single game at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
