Express Softball Suffers Pair of Defeats to NJCAA Division II Orange County

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx softball team fell in both ends of its doubleheader to NJCAA Division II Orange County Community College, 8-0 and 10-2, at Colt Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon.

In Game 1, the contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Colts (9-7) scored five runs in the frame. Orange County then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on its way to the 8-0 win.

For the Express (4-27), Judaiah Gourdine started the game in the circle and went three innings, fanning an opposing hitter in the process. At the plate, she produced a single. Melissa Martinez pitched a shutout inning and struck out a batter.

Lauren Vuorinen, Jaliyah Rosario, Alicia Negrillo, and Sonia Rosa each produced a base hit for the Blue and Gold. 

For Orange County, Gianna Catletti struck out nine Express batters in five innings pitched to earn the complete-game victory.

In Game 2, the Colts scored five runs in the opening inning and never looked back. 

Monroe – Bronx tallied ten hits during the contest, highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Rosario. She also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly earlier in the game and stole a base.
 
Ciara Harriott and Brendalie Oliviery-Baker each compiled two hits for the Express, with the former also stealing a base and scoring two runs. Gourdine, Rosa, and Genesis Matias each produced a base hit.

Martinez tossed a complete game for Monroe.

Sydney Benware went the distance to earn the win for the Colts as she struck out six batters in five innings pitched. At the plate, Catletti launched a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the fifth that clinched the win for Orange County. She went 3-for-4 with three RBIs during the second contest.

Monroe – Bronx will battle Roxbury Community College in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. First pitch at RCC Softball Field is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
