NEW YORK – The Monroe University – Bronx men's volleyball team earned a thrilling five-set Region 15 victory on the road over Borough of Manhattan Community College at BMCC Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The Express (4-13, 2-2 Region 15) won the first two sets by identical scores of 25-17. The Panthers (2-4, 0-4 Region 15) rallied to win the next two games by scores of 25-14 and 25-17. Monroe fell behind, 4-1, in the rubber set but came storming back with five straight points, capped off by a solo block courtesy of Mickey Mingo, to jump out in front. After the score became 8-7 in favor of the Express, the Blue and Gold finished it off with seven straight points to snatch the regional road win.

Jeremy Rivera-Aponte had a strong match for the Express with 11 kills, five service aces, and a trio of digs. Darren Lopez notched 10 kills, nine digs, and a pair of helpers. Edwin Ortega slammed home four putdowns and chipped in on defense with five bumps. David Garcia had a successful outing with five kills, 17 assists, and nine digs. 

Mingo compiled two kills, six digs, and three blocks for Monroe - Bronx. Wiltor Cubas helped with 11 assists. Harold Romero had five digs, while David Lora produced a helper. Luis Vasquez and Fidel Ramirez each had three digs, with the former adding a trio of assists and the latter compiling two kills with three aces. Aiverson Guillen executed seven bumps on the defensive end. Marvin Culmer tallied a kill and a block.

Monroe -Bronx will host Roxbury Community College in a doubleheader at Monroe Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon. Times are 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
