Strong Hitting Powers Express Baseball Past BMCC For Region 15 Win

BRONX – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team earned a dominating Region 15 victory over Borough of Manhattan Community College, 31-5, at Roberto Clemente State Park on Friday afternoon.

The 31 runs that the Express (6-10, 6-0 Region 15) scored are the second most in a single game in program history. Monroe – Bronx scored 32 runs at Bronx Community College on April 23, 2024.

In the win over BMCC (0-6, 0-6 Region 15), the Express fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first but put up five runs in the bottom frame to take a four-run benefit. The key plays of Monroe's productive frame were an RBI single off the bat of Edwin Minaya Jr. that scored Christopher Marlin and a run-scoring single by Yadiel Santana which drove in Giovanny Flores

In the bottom of the second, Marlin produced an RBI single, while Flores drove in two with a base hit to inflate the Blue and Gold's lead to 8-1.

The third inning was a big one for the Express as they scored 11 runs in the stanza to extend their vantage to 19-1. Marlin played a key role by producing a two-run single and then adding an RBI base hit later in the inning. Minaya Jr. had a productive third stanza as he drove in a run with a double and then added an RBI single. Flores brought in two runs with a single.

Monroe – Bronx kept increasing its lead as another RBI by Flores, this time via a double, made it 22-1 in favor of the Express.

After BMCC scored four runs in the top of the sixth, the Blue and Gold added nine more runs in the bottom frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Sael Flete and an RBI base hit courtesy of Jesus Guerrero. Monroe's scoring was capped off by a three-run home to left by Elijah Andino to pad the Express' advantage to 31-5 and that ended up being the final score. 

For the Express during the afternoon, Flores went 5-for-5 with five runs batted in, three runs scored, and a stolen base. Minaya Jr. went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and three runs scored. In addition to his three-run homer, Andino also doubled and crossed home plate twice. Nomar Rodriguez went 2-for-2, including a double, and scored a run. 

Also helping Monroe – Bronx was Juan Diaz who singled, walked twice, stole two bases, and scored a run. Gregrory Cabrera added an RBI, drew a walk, and scored twice. Marlin crossed home plate three times, stole two bags, and earned a base on balls. Yan Ortiz Torres singled, drove in a run, stole two bases, and scored a trio of times. Pablo Aquino scored a pair of runs, added an RBI, walked, and stole a base. Flete crossed home plate twice and earned a base on balls. Abraham Joaquin Taveras singled. Guerrero scored, while Yavier Velazquez crossed home plate a duo of times, doubled, and drove in a run. Joeliel Cruz walked and scored. Adrian Nunez had an RBI, and a run scored. Santana walked, stole a base, and came around to score. 

On the mound for the Express, Anthony Sanchez earned his second victory of the season by going 5.0 innings, giving up just one earned run, and striking out five batters. Yohansell Manzueta pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen and fanned an opposing hitter.

These two teams will play again on Saturday in a doubleheader at Padavan-Preller Field beginning at 12:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
