Express Men's Volleyball Drops Region 15 Semifinal Match to Nassau; Edwin Ortega Named to Region All-Tournament Team

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The No. 4 seed Monroe University – Bronx men's volleyball team fell in its Region 15 Semifinal contest to top-seeded and eventual regional champion Nassau Community College, in straight sets, at Nassau Main Gym on Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 25-9, 25-13, and 25-12.

For the Express (10-18), Edwin Ortega was named to the Region 15 All-Tournament team. Against Nassau (21-2), he produced four kills, just as many digs, and scored a service ace. One of his putdowns gave the Express a 1-0 advantage in the second set which was their only lead of the afternoon.

Also helping Monroe – Bronx was David Garcia who tallied 14 assists and five digs. Harold Romero and Aiverson Guillen each provided five digs of their own. Jeremy Rivera-Aponte notched three successful attacks and four defensive bumps. Darren Lopez provided four kills and five digs. Fidel Ramirez slammed a trio of kills.

For Nassau, Suhaib Amar produced 12 kills and five digs. Christopher Thomas recorded eight kills, nine service aces, and five digs. Eventual Region 15 Tournament MVP Thomas Wilderman added seven kills and a duo of digs.

Monroe – Bronx will compete in the National Invitational, on the campus of Finger Lakes Community College, from April 4 until April 6. The Express enter the national tournament as the No. 8 seed and will take on No. 9 seed Passaic County Community College in the opening round on Friday at 9:00 a.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY  
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
