THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team earned a dominating victory over NJCAA Division II SUNY Sullivan by a score of 84-56, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium, on Saturday evening. Monroe advances to 16-9 this season, while Sullivan drops to 2-15.
The Express shot 48.7% (38-for-78) from the field, while holding the Generals to only 27.0% (17-for-63) shooting from the floor.
Freshman
Dimitre Alston had a big game for the Express by scoring 26 points, grabbing five rebounds, blocking three shots, and dishing out just as many assists. Sophomore
David Malone notched a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while delivering a duo of assists. Rookie
Haley Guillen provided energy off the bench with nine points, three boards, and two steals. Sophomore
Shain Frazier added eight points and three caroms.
"Our guys came to compete today," Express Head Coach
Chris Neely said.
Monroe fell behind early in the game, 7-5, but then scored six unanswered points, capped off by a layup from Alston, to put the home team in the lead for good at 11-7 with 14:27 left before the half. Later in the stanza, another layup by Alston gave Monroe a double-digit cushion at 26-15 with 8:31 remaining in the period. The Generals never pulled to within single digits the rest of the contest. In the second half, Monroe – Bronx built its lead to as many as 30 on its way to the 84-56 victory.
For the Generals, sophomore Kevin Rochez generated 21 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Freshman Christian Brown provided 14 points, four steals, and two helpers. Sophomore Erik Jarecki scored 12 points, delivered four assists, snatched three boards, and forced a duo of steals. Classmate Zyir Fowler compiled eight points, nine rebounds, and a pair of steals.
Monroe – Bronx will host nationally ranked No. 3 Dutchess Community College in a Region 15 matchup on Tuesday. Tipoff at the Monroe Athletic Complex is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
