SELDEN, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team earned a convincing Region 15 victory over Suffolk County Community College, 85-60, at Brookhaven Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the way for Monroe (17-10, 11-6 Region 15) was freshman
Paolo Avvento who scored 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point range. He also forced four steals and dished out two assists. Rookie
Dimitre Alston also had a big game with 18 points, four rebounds, and three steals. He shot 7-for-12 from the floor. Second-year player
David Malone scored eight points and snatched just as many boards. Sophomore
Jayden Gamory and freshman
Jayquan Lee each scored seven points, with the former delivering two assists and grabbing just as many caroms.
Monroe – Bronx concludes the regular season with a Region 15 matchup against Nassau Community College on Tuesday evening. Tipoff at Monsignor Scanlan Gym is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. It's Sophomore Night as the Express men's basketball honorees will be celebrated with a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
It will be a big game for the Express. If they win, they will clinch a home playoff game in the quarterfinal round. If they are defeated, they will be on the road for the regional quarterfinals.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
