CATONSVILLE, MD. – The nationally ranked No. 15 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team improved to 5–0 on the season after holding off a late surge to defeat NJCAA Division II CCBC Catonsville, 69–65, on Sunday afternoon at the Jack Manley Wellness and Athletic Center.
With the win, the Express remain unbeaten, showcasing their composure and balance in another strong road performance.
Monroe came out firing, exploding for 30 points in the opening quarter to take a commanding 19-point lead (30–11). The Express connected on 50 percent of their shots in the first period and knocked down five 3-pointers to set the tone.
Despite Monroe's early dominance, Catonsville (1-3) stormed back in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to single digits. However, key free throws by sophomore
Beverly Williams in the final seconds sealed the victory for the Express.
"Today was a rough one," Express Head Coach
Damel Ling said. "We didn't play our best, but I'm proud we were able to fight through the adversity and figure out a way to win."
Beverly Williams led the charge for the Blue and Gold with a game-high 26 points, including three triples, seven free throws, five steals, and four assists. Fellow sophomore standout
Salimah Williams followed with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting and added five rebounds, two assists, and a block.
Inside,
Aneyah McLamb once again controlled the paint for Monroe, finishing with six points, 11 rebounds, and two steals.
Winter Smith contributed across the board with five points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while
Jazmyne Rios provided an offensive boost off the bench with eight points and four rebounds.
Monroe – Bronx looks to stay perfect as they travel to Long Island City, N.Y., to face Region 15-foe LaGuardia Community College on Tuesday, November 11, at 6 p.m. inside the LaGuardia CC Sports Gymnasium.
