Express Men's Soccer Bows Out in Region 15 Semifinal Against No. 9 Suffolk County

SELDEN, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team's incredible season ended on Wednesday afternoon as the fifth-seeded Express fell to top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 9 Suffolk County Community College, 4-1, at Ammerman Campus Soccer Field.

The Sharks (11-4-2) advance to the Region 15 Championship match which will take place on Saturday against the winner of the other regional semifinal contest, #6-seed Kingsborough Community College and #2-seed Ulster County Community College.

It was a productive season for the Express as they finished with a 9-5-2 record including a win over nationally ranked No. 10 Nassau Community College on the road in the Region 15 Quarterfinal round.

The Sharks exploded out of the gate early as Jazai Kidd received the cross from Steven Vargas and drilled the ball into the back of the cage from the left side, less than two minutes into the contest, to give Suffolk County a 1-0 lead.

Vargas netted the official match-winner in the 26th minute as he rifled the ball into the net from the center of the box to pad the Sharks' lead to two. Giovanni Barnes earned the assist.

The Express fell behind 3-0 in the second half but did not go down without a fight. The Blue and Gold got on the board in the 82nd minute thanks to a goal by Alejandro Aguilar from the left wing that pulled Monroe to within two.

Less than six minutes later, however, Suffolk County regained its three-goal cushion thanks to Vargas intercepting the ball from the goalkeeper and launching the ball into the cage, point-blank, for his second of the match which put Monroe in a 4-1 hole. That ended up being the final score.

During the afternoon, the Express had the edge in shots, 18-16, but the Sharks had the advantage in shots on target, 8-5. The Express took most of the corner kicks, 6-4.

Kimany Arzu made four saves for Monroe.

Benjamin Allen stopped four shots to earn the win in goal for Suffolk County. Ronan Montana scored the Sharks' third goal of the afternoon which was assisted by Justin Gorleku.

The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team will return to the pitch in 2026.
