Express Men's Soccer Battles Suffolk County to Draw on Sophomore Day

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team pushed Suffolk County Community College to a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Flowers Park on Thursday afternoon.

The Express are now 7-2-2 in the region (7-4-2 overall) and have locked up the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Region 15 Postseason. The Sharks' record against Region 15 competition now stands at 9-1-2 (9-4-2 in general) and are currently in a three-way tie for first with Ulster County Community College and Westchester Community College in the regional standings.

The star of the match for the Express was freshman goalkeeper Kimany Arzu who stopped all five shots he faced to earn the shutout.

Monroe outshot Suffolk County, 16-12, during the match and had the advantage in shots on target at 9-5. The Blue and Gold took all six of the corner kick opportunities.

The Express had several grade-A chances to break the tie but could not cash in. Salim Anas had a chance to win it for Monroe with 15 seconds left in the game but his point-blank shot was stopped by Sharks' netminder Benjamin Allen. Each team had to settle for the tie and a point in the regional standings.

Leading the offense for the Express during the afternoon was Juan Ramirez as he tallied four shots, including three that were on goal. Brando Tuba produced six shots and two of them were on target.

Allen made nine saves during the match to pick up the shutout for Suffolk County.

Prior to the contest, Monroe – Bronx honored eight of its sophomores with a ceremony. The honorees were Anas, Antonio Herrera, Angel Grijalva, Yohanne Miakatsindila, Naim Bakere, Kevin Chipantiza, Israel Ramirez, and Juan Ramirez.

The Express will close out the regular season with a Region 15 road matchup against Dutchess Community College on Tuesday afternoon. The action on the campus of Culinary Institute of America, up in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., will begin at 4 p.m.
