LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. - The Monroe University Bronx men's basketball team brought their A-game to LaGuardia Gym, on Thursday evening, securing a 67-34 win in Region 15 play against LaGuardia Community College. Both teams showcased incredible heart and determination throughout the game.
Monroe's high-energy defense and fast-paced offense were keys to their success, but LaGuardia displayed true grit, fighting hard until the final buzzer.
Monroe set the tone early in the contest and built a solid lead of 31-17 lead at halftime. The Express maintained their momentum throughout the game as a jump shot by sophomore
Shain Frazier gave the Blue and Gold their largest lead of the evening, at 67-30, with 1:35 remaining.
"Defense and transition offense were keys during the victory," Express Head Coach
Chris Neely said.
Leading the way for Monroe was freshman
Dimitre Alston who scored a game-high 26 points, went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line, grabbed four rebounds, and forced two steals. Rookie
Haley Guillen tallied eight points, seven steals, and a trio of rebounds. First-year players
Davon Taylor and
Malike Smart each scored six points with the former forcing two steals and dishing out just as many assists, while the latter snatched four boards. Sophomore
Jayden Gamory added five points and two caroms.
For LaGuardia, sophomore Travon Lawrence provided 17 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Charlie Hall added 10 points and four boards. Sophomore Joshua Pierre snatched six caroms.
Monroe – Bronx will host Kingsborough Community College, in a key Region 15 contest, on Thursday evening. Tipoff at Monroe Athletic Complex is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
