Balanced Scoring Leads Express Men's Basketball to Convincing Win Over Bergen

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team earned a dominating victory over Bergen Community College, 101-71, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium.
 
Sophomore Rene Williams converted a layup 1:18 into the contest to give Monroe (13-8) the lead for good at 4-2. With 16:13 remaining in the half, classmate Jayden Gamory produced a layup of his own, while being fouled. He added the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play to extend Monroe's advantage to 9-2. 
 
The Express kept building their cushion as a triple by freshman Michael Samuda padded his team's lead to 44-19 with 5:23 left before the break. The Blue and Gold went up by as many as 31 during the opening stanza, including a 57-26 benefit at the end of the period. 
 
In the second half, Monroe took its largest lead of the game at 37, thanks to a layup by freshman Davon Taylor to put his team up 95-58 with 4:34 to go, before earning the win by a score of 101-71.
 
It was a big offensive night for Monroe as 13 players found their way into the scoring column. Williams had a double-double with 12 points and just as many rebounds. Freshman Dimitre Alston scored a team-high 17 points to go along with three rebounds. Rookie Paolo Avvento generated 12 points, two boards, and just as many assists. Sophomore David Malone snatched 12 caroms, delivered four assists, and scored just as many points.
 
Also having a productive game for the Express was freshman Nehemiah McCallop as he produced nine points and eight rebounds. Classmate Moustapha Sarr also had nine points, while gathering two rebounds and delivering a duo of assists. Gamory provided seven points, six caroms, and just as many helpers. Freshman Jayquan Lee recorded eight points, four boards, and three assists. Taylor chipped in with seven points and two assists.
 
For the Bulldogs (3-16), sophomore Amire Walker led all players with 20 points. Freshman Evan Meberg had a solid game with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Sophomore Matthew Kelleher added 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Freshman Kross Ford generated 11 points and five rebounds, while second-year player Jordan Lugo chipped in with seven points, just as many caroms, six assists, and three steals. Freshman Kobe Rivers helped with eight points, six rebounds, and a duo of steals. 
 
Monroe – Bronx will travel down just down the road to Bronx Community College for a Region 15 contest on Tuesday evening. Tipoff at Alumni Gym is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
