Express Men's Basketball Tops BMCC in Region 15 Play

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team earned its third win in a row by defeating Borough of Manhattan Community College in Region 15 play, 77-54, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. The Express advance to 12-7 (8-3 Region 15), while the Panthers drop to 4-9 (4-7 Region 15). 
 
The Express fell behind 3-2 early in the contest but then an 8-2 run, capped off by a successful jump shot from sophomore Jayden Gamory, gave the Express the lead for good at 10-5 with 15:22 left in the opening half. Monroe – Bronx took an 18-point lead into the intermission and then concluded the game with a 6-0 run to earn the 23-point victory (77-54).
 
"Tonight, our culture showed up," Express Head Coach Chris Neely said. "We played for one another, defended, and had fun doing it."
 
Sophomore David Malone produced a double-double for the Express during the evening with 11 points and 19 rebounds with 10 of those boards coming on the offensive end. Rookie Paolo Avvento scored 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. He also grabbed five caroms and delivered four assists. 
 
Also helping Monroe was freshman Dimitre Alston who tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, and a duo of steals. Sophomore Rene Williams brought down 13 rebounds and netted four points. Freshman Michael Samuda scored 11 points, snatched three boards, and delivered two assists. Classmate Haley Guillen produced six points, a game-high seven steals, two helpers, and just as many rebounds. Gamory registered four points, six rebounds, and five assists. 
 
For BMCC, sophomore Khalil Black provided 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Classmate Kimmeo Dixon added 12 points, four boards, just as many assists, and two blocks. Freshman Brandon Duran scored 11 points and forced two steals. Second-year player Nick Baksh had a solid game with five points, seven rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and just as many assists. Sophomore Emmanuel Agyei chipped in with nine points and four rebounds. 
 
Monroe – Bronx will return to Monsignor Scanlan Gym on Thursday for a Region 15 clash against Hostos Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
