Express Women's Volleyball Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month With Victory Over Roxbury

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team earned a convincing victory in straight sets over Roxbury Community College, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium, on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 25-9, 25-13, and 25-5. The Express advance to 4-3 for the season, while the Tigers drop to 0-5.
 
"We continue progressing and getting better," Express Head Women's Volleyball Coach Odaly Aponte-Orta said. "Hard work and commitment go hand in hand with these group of ladies. All aboard!"
 
The Monroe – Bronx women's volleyball team dedicated this match to Hispanic Heritage Month.
 
In the match, The Express never trailed in the first set and led from wire to wire in the third game. Roxbury had a brief 5-2 advantage in the second set, but Monroe scored five unanswered points, highlighted by back-to-back service aces courtesy of sophomore libero Yasmel Molina, to put the Blue and Gold in front for good. 
 
Leading the way for Monroe – Bronx during the afternoon was sophomore middle blocker Nisa Llanos who had a match-high eight kills. Second-year opposite hitter Princess Corona registered a career-high five kills. Rookie defensive specialist Julia Ramos produced eight service aces, 12 assists, and a duo of digs. Classmate Gabriela De La Rosa nailed nine service and helped on defense with three digs. 
 
Monroe – Bronx will play a pair of Region 15 games, on Saturday afternoon, on the campus of Nassau Community College. Monroe will battle Hostos Community College at 12:00 p.m. and then Bronx Community College at 2:00 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
