Express Baseball Splits Final Two Games of Regular Season With Queensborough

BELLEROSE, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx baseball team concluded the regular season with a split against Queensborough Community College, at Padavan-Preller Field, on Saturday afternoon. The Express won the first game, 16-4, while the Tigers were victorious in the second contest, 6-4. Queensborough was the official home team for the two games.

The Express clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region 15 Championships with an 18-6 in regional play (21-20 overall). The Tigers finish their season 7-17 both overall and in the region.

In the opening game, the Express scored three runs in the opening inning to take a 3-0 lead. It started with runners on second and third. Freshman third baseman Giovanny Flores drilled a single to right that scored sophomore center fielder Bryant Quezada from third and freshman shortstop Yan Ortiz Torres from second for Monroe's first two runs. Flores ended up advancing to third thanks to a fielding error. He then scored on an RBI single courtesy of sophomore first baseman Camilo Rodriguez to extend the Blue and Gold's lead to 3-0.

The Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the third to pull to within two. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Queensborough tacked on three more runs to jump out to a 4-3 advantage.

Monroe – Bronx was set up with runners on second and third, two outs, in the top of the fifth. Sophomore left fielder Gregory Espinal singled on a line drive to right which scored Bryant Quezada and Rodriguez to catapult Monroe back in front, 5-4.

The big inning for the Express was the top of the sixth as the Blue and Gold scored 11 runs in the frame to take a commanding 16-4 hold. The big blow during Monroe's productive inning was a three-run homer to left by sophomore infielder Adrian Quezada which made the score 9-4 in favor of the Express. Also highlighted in that inning was an RBI double and a two-run double by freshman second baseman Joeliel Cruz in the same inning, a bases-loaded RBI walk courtesy of rookie designated hitter Edwin Minaya Jr., and a two-run single by Ortiz Torres.

Sophomore pitcher Luis Roman of Monroe – Bronx retired Queenborough's lineup in order during the bottom of the sixth to clinch the Region 15 victory for the Express.

For Monroe, Flores went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Bryant Quezada went 2-for-3 with a double. Ortiz Torres hit two singles and stole a base. Rodriguez scored two runs, walked just as many times, and stole a base. Cruz crossed home plate twice, while freshman catcher Yadiel Santana scored two times, singled, and drove in a run. Freshman right fielder Alfredo Jimenez Jr. scored a pair of runs, picked up an RBI, and earned a walk. Minaya Jr. tripled and scored a run. Espinal crossed home plate.

On the mound, Roman got the win out of the bullpen for the Express by tossing 2.1 shutout innings, giving up just one hit, and striking out two batters.

Monroe got off to another good start in game two as an RBI double by Rodriguez and then a run-scoring single by Minaya Jr. gave the Express a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first.

The Tigers answered in the second with four runs to catapult themselves to a 4-2 benefit. Queensborough added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 5-2.

Monroe – Bronx did not go down without a fight as an RBI single to right by Rodriguez and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Minaya Jr. pulled the Express to within one, at 5-4, in the top of the fifth.

That score remained until the bottom of the sixth when Queensborough added a run to go back up by two. Monroe – Bronx could not push across a run in the top of the seventh which clinched the win for the Tigers.
