Express Softball Wins Opening Game Against No. 10 Suffolk County; Earns Region 15 Doubleheader Split

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx softball team earned a split of its Region 15 doubleheader against nationally ranked No. 10 Suffolk County Community College, at Flowers Park, on Tuesday afternoon. The Express won the opening game, 9-0, but dropped the second contest, 14-6.

Sophomore pitcher Hilda Sanchez had an impressive pitching performance for the Express (9-22, 3-1 Region 15) in game one as she struck out two batters, gave up no runs, surrendered just two hits, and only walked one batter to earn the complete-game shutout victory in the circle.

In the first contest, Monroe – Bronx scored all nine of its runs during the opening inning. The highlights of the Express' big frame were an RBI single by Sanchez, a two-run single off the bat of freshman right fielder Amandy Rodriguez, and an RBI walk with the bases loaded by both freshman shortstop Brendalie Oliviery-Baker and first-year catcher Brianna Talley

Sanchez cruised through the game in the circle for the Express. In the top of the fifth, she got the last two opposing hitters to fly out to clinch the key regional victory for the Blue and Gold.

At the plate for Monroe – Bronx, Talley drew three walks, stole a base, and scored a run. Rookie third-base student-athlete Lauren Vuorinen singled, picked up an RBI, stole a base, and scored. Rookie center fielder Ciara Harriott singled and came around to score. Freshman second-base player Sonia Rosa drew a walk, drove in a run, and crossed home plate. Oliviery-Baker produced a hit, stole a base, and scored a run. Sanchez, Rodriguez, and rookie left fielder Jaliyah Rosario each crossed home plate.

In game two, the Sharks (7-7, 5-1 Region 15) got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a two-run inside-the-park home run off the bat of sophomore center fielder Kaylin McDonald to put Monroe – Bronx in an early 2-0 hole.

The Express got a run back in the bottom frame thanks to an RBI single by sophomore first-base student-athlete Angelica Uribe-Perez which scored Harriott from second to slice Monroe's deficit in half at 2-1.

Suffolk County countered with three runs in the second and five more in the third to take a commanding 10-1 hold. Monroe – Bronx scored two runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to an RBI single by Vuorinen and then Rodriguez picking up a run batted in by reaching on a fielder's choice, to shrink the Sharks' benefit to 10-3.

After Suffolk County put up a four-spot in the fourth, Monroe – Bronx put two runners on base in the bottom frame. Uribe-Perez stepped up to the plate and drilled the ball down the left-field line. Oliviery-Baker and Talley scored, then Uribe-Perez rounded third and crossed home plate for the three-run inside-the-park home run to narrow Monroe's deficit to 14-6.

The Express had an opportunity to score more runs in the bottom of the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out. However, the Sharks were able to get the final two outs to prevent the Express from getting closer as No. 10 Suffolk County was able to salvage the split.

For Monroe – Bronx, Talley went 2-for-2, scored twice, drew a walk, and stole a base. Harriott worked two walks, stole a base, and came around to score. Uribe-Perez scored twice and earned a base on balls. Rosa drew two walks and stole a base, while Sanchez singled and walked. Rodriguez walked and Rosario reached base with a single.

In the circle for Suffolk County, freshman pitcher Kate Smith got the win as she pitched three innings in relief.

Monroe – Bronx will once again be in Region 15 action at Flowers Park on Thursday with a doubleheader against Dutchess Community College. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
