NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx baseball team suffered a setback against nationally ranked No. 14 Suffolk County Community College on Friday afternoon, falling by a score of 7-0 in Region 15 play at Flowers Park. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for Monroe – Bronx, all in regional play.
The game started off as a pitchers' duel in the early going, as freshman pitcher
Jayden Moya of the Express (10-15, 8-2 Region 15) and second-year pitcher Jack Turner of the Sharks (16-12, 6-3 Region 15) matched zeros for the first four innings. Monroe – Bronx loaded the bases during the third and fourth innings but could not push across a run.
The Sharks broke through in the fifth as sophomore first baseman Dominic LaFroscia drilled a double to left, scoring rookie right fielder Dominick Viggiano from second to give Suffolk County a 1-0 advantage. The visiting team tacked on another run in the sixth and then two more in the seventh to go up 4-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore catcher
Hecxiel Perez led off the frame with a single for Monroe. Two batters later, rookie shortstop
Yan Ortiz Torres was hit by a pitch to set up runners at first and second, with two outs. However, Monroe – Bronx could not get the big hit as the Sharks once again escaped a jam without giving up any runs.
Suffolk County broke the game open by scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to take a commanding 7-0 hold and that ended up being the final score.
On the mound for the Sharks, Turner got the win as he went eight innings of shutout ball and fanned 11 Express hitters.
Moya had a solid start for Monroe, giving up just one earned run in 4.2 innings pitched, while striking out two batters. However, he took the loss on the mound.
At the plate for the Express, freshman third baseman
Giovanny Flores reached base with a triple. First-year designated hitter
Elio Sanchez drew two walks. Ortiz Torres and freshman second baseman
Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio each reached base with a single. Freshman right fielder
Alfredo Jimenez Jr., sophomore left fielder
