LA PLATA, Md. – The Monroe College – Bronx softball team dropped a pair of games against NJCAA Division II College of Southern Maryland, 8-1 and 14-0, at the Southern Maryland Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.
In the opening game, freshman center fielder
Ciara Harriott and second-year infielder
Angelica Uribe-Perez each drilled a double for the Express (0-8), with the former drawing two walks. Sophomore catcher
Ciara Aviles drove in a run, while freshman right fielder
Brendalie Oliviery-Baker produced a single. Rookie third-base student-athlete
Lauren Vuorinen stole a base and first-year shortstop
Brianna Talley drew a walk.
It was not enough for Monroe, as Southern Maryland (2-0) scored six runs across the first three innings on its way to the victory in game one.
Freshman pitcher Laci Wood earned the complete-game win in the circle for the Hawks as she gave up just one earned run and struck out three batters in seven innings pitched.
In game two, Southern Maryland scored five runs in the opening inning and never looked back.
For Monroe, Aviles and Harriott each went 2-for-2, with the latter stealing a base. First-year second-base player
Sonia Rosa hit a single and earned a base on balls. Oliviery-Baker picked up a hit, while Vuorinen and sophomore first-base student-athlete
Hilda Sanchez each produced a walk.
Rookie pitcher Kayla Twigg pitched five innings of shutout ball to earn the victory for Southern Maryland.
Monroe – Bronx will head to New Jersey on Saturday for a doubleheader at Rowan College South Jersey - Cumberland. First pitch at Dukes Softball Complex is set for 12:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
