NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to NJCAA Division II Orange County Community College, 20-2 and 13-1, at Flowers Park on Thursday afternoon.
In game one, the Colts (2-0) scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. The Express (0-10) scored twice in the bottom of the third thanks to a double down the left field line off the bat of freshman infielder
Brendalie Oliviery-Baker to score rookie center fielder
Ciara Harriott from second and then Oliviery-Baker ended up rounding the bases to score within the same play, thanks to a fielding error in left field. Oliviery-Baker was credited with one RBI on the play. It was not enough for the Express as Orange County went on to earn the convincing opening-game victory.
For Monroe, Harriott reached base with a single and stole second before scoring on Oliviery-Baker's double. Oliviery-Baker also stole a base, while sophomore pitcher
Angelica Uribe-Perez drew a walk at the plate. Rookie catcher
Sonia Rosa also earned a base on balls for the Express.
In the circle for the Colts, freshman pitcher Gianna Catletti struck out 10 batters and gave up just one earned run in five innings pitched to earn the victory.
In game two, sophomore pitcher
Hilda Sanchez helped the Express get off to a good start by retiring Orange County's lineup in order during the top of the first. However, the Colts scored five runs each in the second and third innings to take a commanding lead. After the visiting team added three more runs in the top of the fifth, the Express got one back in the bottom frame as Sanchez launched a single up the middle to score Oliviery-Baker from second for Monroe's only run of the contest. Orange County eventually recorded the final out to earn the sweep.
For the Express, sophomore outfielder
Herleen Castillo and rookie catcher
Jaliyah Rosario each reached base with a single. Oliviery-Baker stole another base. Uribe-Perez, Rosa, freshman shortstop
Lauren Vuorinen, and rookie outfielder
Brianna Castellanos each drew a walk.
For Orange County, sophomore pitcher Molly Martin fanned seven batters and gave up just one earned run in five innings pitched to pick up her first victory of the season.
Monroe – Bronx will return to Flowers Park on Saturday for a non-region doubleheader against Roxbury Community College. First pitch is set for noon.
