Express Softball Drops Two Games to Nationally Ranked No. 5 Rowan College of Gloucester County

SEWELL, N.J. – The Monroe College – Bronx softball team dropped two games to nationally ranked No. 5 Rowan College of Gloucester County, 13-0 and 15-3, at the Rowan College – Gloucester Softball Field on Friday afternoon.

The Express' (2-13) lineup was shut down in the first game, only managing one base runner during the contest, while the Roadrunners (6-3) scored seven runs in the opening inning and never looked back. In the second game, Monroe's bats showed more life by producing three runs on six hits.

With the Express down 3-0 heading to the top of the second in game two, sophomore first-base student-athlete Hilda Sanchez drilled a two-out RBI double to center that scored first-year catcher Sonia Rosa from first to pull Monroe to within 3-1. However, Rowan scored eight runs in the bottom frame to break the game open.

In the top of the third, freshman center fielder Ciara Harriott reached base with a single and then stole two bases. She ended up scoring on a throwing error by the catcher for Monroe's second run of the afternoon. Harriott scored her second run of the game in the top of the fifth by advancing home from third thanks to freshman shortstop Brianna Talley stealing second base and drawing the throw.

It was not enough as the Express fell in both games of the doubleheader.

For Monroe, Sanchez went 2-for-2 and stole a base. Harriott had two hits, including a double. Talley drew a walk and stole two bases. Rosa and freshman third-base player Lauren Vuorinen each reached base with a single. Sophomore second-base student-athlete Ciara Aviles earned a base-on-balls.

For the Roadrunners, sophomore pitcher Gemma Galloway pitched a no-hitter and struck out nine batter to earn the complete-game shutout victory in game one. Freshman pitcher Angelina Rinaldi also earned a complete-game victory as she struck out five batters and gave up just two earned runs in game two.

Monroe – Bronx will open Region 15 play on Saturday with a pair of games at Dutchess Community College. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
