BROOKLYN, N.Y. - It was a historic night on Wednesday evening as the Monroe College - Bronx men's volleyball team earned its first victory in program history, defeating Kingsborough Community College in Region 15 play by a score of 3-1. Set scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-23. The history-making win for the Express (1-16, 1-3 Region 15) took place at Kingsborough CC Gymnasium.
"A lot of hard work and growing pains are starting to pay off," Express Head Coach
Sean Culwell said. "The team is coming together on and off the court."
Leading the way for the Express was rookie middle blocker
Jeremy Rivera-Aponte who slammed home a career-high 19 kills, produced six blocks, scored three service aces, and provided two digs. Classmate
Marvin Culmer also had a monster match with a personal-best 15 kills and seven blocks, plus he added an ace as well.
Freshman outside hitter
Juan Arias had a solid performance for Monroe with six kills, seven digs, four service aces, and a block. Rookie setter
Wiltor Cubas produced a match-high 33 assists, while first-year outside hitter
Anthony Estevez provided three kills and five digs.
Freshman defensive specialist
Harold Romero anchored the defense for the Express with eight digs and added two assists on the offensive end. Classmate
Elvis Ndubuisi generated three digs and two service aces, while first-year middle blocker
Shain Frazier added three blocks and a kill.
Monroe - Bronx will look to continue its winning ways on Monday evening when they host Nassau Community College in a Region 15 contest at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, N.Y. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
