Express Women's Basketball to Battle No. 7 Dallas College Cedar Valley in Opening Round of NJCAA Tournament on Wednesday Evening

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team will take on nationally ranked No. 7 Dallas College Cedar Valley in the opening round of the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament, in Rochester, Minn., on Wednesday evening. Tipoff at the Rochester Regional Sports Center is set for 7:00 p.m. eastern time / 6:00 p.m. central time. Monroe – Bronx (18-16) will enter the National Tournament as the No. 11 seed, while Dallas Cedar Valley (17-5) will compete as the No. 6 seed.
 
The winner of the contest will compete in the quarterfinal round of the NJCAA Championships on Thursday evening. The full bracket can be seen in the video located inside this link

The Express earned an automatic bid into the NJCAA Tournament by capturing both the Region 15 and Northeast District Championships. Monroe secured the titles by defeating nationally ranked No. 10 and second-seeded Nassau Community College, 66-64, at Kingsborough Community College Gymnasium on Sunday, March 3. It marked Monroe's third consecutive regional/district championship and automatic bid into the NJCAA Postseason.
 
The Suns earned their spot in the National Tournament by defeating Joliet Junior College on the road in the Central District Championship game, 75-61, back on March 1. It's the second time in team history that Dallas Cedar Valley will compete in the NJCAA Tournament, with the previous occasion occurring during the 2019-20 season. 
 
Leading the way for the Express this season has been freshman guard Daysiah Smith. The Most Valuable Player of the Region 15 Championships and First Team All-Region honoree is averaging 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 4.5 steals per game this year. First-year guard Tiffany Newsome is generating 7.5 points, 7.2 boards, and 2.6 steals per contest. Freshman guard Tymere Moorer is providing 7.7 points, 5.6 caroms, and 2.5 steals per game.
 
For the Suns, sophomore guard Carmela Hayden is scoring 14.6 points and dishing out 3.4 assists per game this season. Classmate Deja Thomas is tallying 12.5 points, 6.0 assists, and 5.4 steals per contest. Freshman forward Precious Jackson-Sanders is averaging 11.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per outing.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
