Express Basketball Teams to Take On Kingsborough on Thursday

BRONX – On Thursday, February 8, the Monroe College - Bronx Express basketball teams will take on Kingsborough Community College in a Region 15 doubleheader, with the women playing at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men at 8:00 p.m. The games will take place at the Kingsborough CC Gym.

There will be live stats for the respective games at MonroeExpress.com/WBBLiveStats and MonroeExpress.com/MBBLiveStats.

For the women's contest, the last time these two teams matched up, Kingsborough (14-5, 13-4 Region 15) came away with the win, 79-68, back on January 25 at Monsignor Scanlan.

Freshman guard Daysiah Smith led the way for the Express (14-11, 9-3 Region 15) in their last matchup against Kingsborough with 25 points and seven rebounds followed by rookie guard Tiffany Newsome nearing a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

First-year guard Jayden Vega and classmate Tionna Davis of Kingsborough both had explosive games against Monroe Express in that matchup as Vega led the way with 30 points and Davis recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

With both teams shooting 30.0% from the field there was a lot of aggressiveness and energy on the defensive end, and they will go at it again on Thursday.

Coming into this game, Smith is the leading scorer for Monroe Express averaging 21.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

Monroe has won two of its last three games.

For the men, Monroe (16-9, 10-4 Region 15) has won six regional games in a row and occupy second place in the Region 15 standings. The Express won the previous head-to-head matchup with the Wave, 72-62, on January 25.

Sophomore forward Abubakar Kromah had an outstanding game for the Express by generating a double-double with 30 points and 19 rebounds, both game highs, while dishing out six assists, forcing two steals, and blocking a shot. Kromah shot 13-for-23 from the field, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Derrick Simpson also propelled the Express with 11 points, three steals, and two rebounds.

For Kingsborough (9-12, 7-10 Region 15), freshman guard Orion Anyango generated 20 points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Rookie guard Chris Jace had a near double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while dishing out four assists, blocking four shots, and forcing just as many steals.
