Express Women's Basketball Surges Past Suffolk County in Region 15 Play

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convincing Region 15 victory over Suffolk County Community College, 67-38, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. The Express (14-11, 9-3 Region 15) complete the season sweep of the Sharks (1-17, 1-14 Region 15) and solidify their position as the fourth seed in the Region 15 standings.
 
The Express fell behind, 9-5, early in the contest but finished the opening quarter on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good at 14-10 after 10 minutes of play.
 
Leading the way for Monroe – Bronx during the evening was freshman guard Daysiah Smith who netted a team-high 19 points, forced a game-best eight steals, grabbed three rebounds, and dished out two assists. Sophomore forward Kristina Poitier-Wells snatched a team-high 13 rebounds, scored six points, and blocked three shots. First-year guard Tiffany Newsome tallied 11 points, six boards, four steals, and a trio of assists. Second-year forward Xing Stewart-Greer scored nine points and clutched four caroms.
 
The Express came out sluggish to start, falling behind by a score of 9-5 with 4:27 remaining in the opening quarter. From that point, the Express got on track as a layup by Newsome began a 14-2 run that stretched into the second quarter to give the home team a 19-11 benefit and they never looked back. Smith capped off the run with a successful jump shot to give the Express the eight-point lead with 9:05 to go in the first half.
 
Later in the stanza, Smith buried a triple that put her team up by double digits, at 26-16, with 4:35 remaining until the break. The Blue and Gold took a 29-19 advantage into the intermission.
 
Monroe – Bronx blew the game open in the early stages of the second half by scoring 10 unanswered points at the beginning of the third quarter to inflate its cushion to 39-19. Stewart-Greer and Newsome each produced two buckets during Monroe's dominating run. The Express went up by 33 before taking a 56-23 hold into the final period of regulation play.
 
The home team went back up by 33 a couple of times in the fourth quarter before earning the 67-38 victory.
 
For Monroe, freshman guard Tymere Moorer added nine points, six boards, and five steals. Rookie guard Leanna Morales forced six steals, grabbed four rebounds, drained three free throws, and dished out a pair of assists. Freshman guard Jah Gunter generated four points and five rebounds.
 
For the Sharks, first-year guard Alyssa Dixon led all players with 22 points, gathered five rebounds, and collected three steals. Rookie forward Jasmine Beverly brought down 14 boards, while freshman forward Sanderlee Thervil added six points and 13 rebounds.
 
Monroe – Bronx will travel to Brooklyn on Thursday for a Region 15 showdown against Kingsborough Community College. Tipoff at the Kingsborough Gymnasium is set for 6:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
