Express Women's Basketball Notches Region 15 Win Over LaGuardia

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team earned a Region 15 victory over LaGuardia Community College, 65-33, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Thursday evening. The Express advance to 12-10 overall and 8-3 in Region 15 play. The Red Hawks drop to 4-12 for the season and 4-10 in the region.
 
The Express got off to a slow start as LaGuardia took a 14-13 advantage with 7:02 left to go in the opening half. However, momentum quickly turned in Monroe's favor as the Express went on a 20-2 run to finish the second quarter, highlighted by three consecutive layups from sophomore guard Davian Myers. Rookie guard Tymere Moorer capped off the game-altering blitz with a 3-point basket in the closing seconds to send the Express into the break with a 33-16 hold. 
 
Monroe inflated its lead up to 34 during the second half before earning the convincing regional win.
 
Leading the way for the Express was Myers who produced a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 15 rebounds, while shooting 50% (5-for-10) from the field. She also forced four steals and dished out three assists. Rookie guard Leanna Morales tallied 15 points and seven steals, both career-highs, while dishing out a pair of assists. Freshman guard Tiffany Newsome scored eight points, snatched nine boards, forced eight steals, and delivered four assists. 
 
First-year forward Da'Mya Cheatham also sparked the Express by registering eight points, six caroms, and a pair of steals. Moorer provided nine points and two rebounds, while second-year forward Kristina Poitier-Wells had a solid game with four points, six boards, three assists, and two steals. Classmate Xing Stewart-Greer added seven points and six rebounds. Rookie guard Jah Gunter generated five assists, three rebounds, two points, and a pair of steals. 
 
For the Red Hawks, sophomore guard Shemiah Sealey tallied 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Rookie center Moutiatou Djibring led all players with 23 rebounds, while scoring eight points and blocking two shots.
 
It's a quick turnaround for the Express as they will travel to Upstate, N.Y. to take on Herkimer Community College on Friday evening. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. 

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
