BALTIMORE, M.D. – The nationally ranked No. 8 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with a loss to NJCAA Division II nationally ranked No. 4 Community College of Baltimore County – Essex, 113-53, at the CCBC – Essex Athletics and Wellness Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights (1-0), just one year removed from winning the NJCAA Division II National Championship, led this contest from wire to wire.
Monroe – Bronx played well in the fourth quarter, only getting edged by a 21-19 margin against the perennial NJCAA Division II national contenders.
Leading the way for the Express (0-1), was sophomore forward
Makira Bunsie who scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds. Second-year guard
Tymere Moorer added 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Freshman guard
Beverly Williams had a solid collegiate debut with eight points, three assists, and a pair of steals.
For CCBC – Essex, freshman guard Reghan Robinson had a game-high 26 points off the bench. Sophomore guard Antionique Auston produced a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Monroe – Bronx will take on Queensborough Community College, at RFK Gymnasium, on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
