No. 14 Express Women's Basketball Rallies to Defeat NJCAA Division II CCBC - Catonsville

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 14 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned an impressive come-from-behind victory over NJCAA Division II Community College of Baltimore County – Catonsville, 64-60, at Monsignor Scanlan Gym on Sunday afternoon.

The Express (8-2) extend their winning streak to six games which includes victories over nationally ranked and D2 opponents.

"We had a difficult first half, but then we fought through and showed signs of being a good team," Express Head Women's Basketball Coach Damel Ling said.

Leading the way for Monroe was sophomore guard Tiffany Newsome who tallied a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while forcing three steals, blocking two shots, and dishing out just as many assists. Freshman guard Beverly Williams netted 16 points, snatched five boards, gathered five steals, and delivered four assists. Second-year guard Tymere Moorer added 16 points of her own, including 4-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc, while forcing five steals, snatching three rebounds, and dishing out two assists.

The Express got off to a slow start in the game as a 3-point basket by freshman guard Maleyah Bell capped off six unanswered points for the Cardinals (0-6) to give them a 19-7 advantage with 7:24 remaining in the opening half. Monroe answered with a 7-0 run, concluded by Moorer's triple to pull the Blue and Gold to within four.

Later in the opening half, sophomore forward Makira Bunsie converted a layup to narrow Monroe – Bronx's deficit to 27-25 with 1:33 to go until the break. CCBC drained a free throw with 31 seconds left and went into the locker room with a 28-25 edge.

Monroe struggled for the majority of the third quarter, falling behind 40-32 with 3:30 to go. In a blink of an eye, both Moorer and Beverly Williams got the Express back on track by combining for back-to-back triples to pull the home team to within two with 2:50 left.

With just 1:32 remaining in the third, and Monroe down by two, Beverly Williams converted a layup while being fouled to tie the game. She added the free throw to give the Express their first lead since the opening quarter, at 43-42. After Monroe got a stop, Beverly Williams capitalized on another 3-point play, this time by nailing it from beyond the arc, to build her team's lead to 46-42 with one minute left in the stanza. The Cardinals were able to narrow their disadvantage to two before the end of the quarter.

Both teams exchanged baskets for most of the final period of regulation time. With 2:31 left, sophomore forward Jocelyn Fogel drained a free throw for the Cardinals to even the game at 58 points apiece. Less than a minute later, Catonsville had the ball with a chance to take the lead, but Moorer deflected a pass, and it went right to Newsome who dribbled the ball down the court, and she converted the fast-break layup to give the Express a 60-58 benefit with 1:48 remaining. A few possessions later, Newsome provided Monroe with an insurance bucket to pad her team's lead to four with 56 seconds left.

Fogel executed a layup to pull CCBC to within 62-60 with 50 seconds left. Monroe could not capitalize on the other end and the visiting team got the ball back. The Cardinals attempted a 3-point shot with 34 seconds left which would have given them the lead but the ball did not go into the basket and freshman guard Salimah Williams snatched the rebound.

Beverly Williams was fouled intentionally with 18 seconds left and went 1-for-2 from the line to extend Monroe's lead to three. CCBC was fouled on the next possession but went 0-for-2 from the line to keep the game at 63-60. Newsome added an insurance free throw with six ticks left on the clock to make it a two-possession game at 64-60 and that ended up being the final score.

For the Express, Bunsie finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while forcing three steals. Salimah Williams scored four points, dished out a game-high eight assists, and snatched just as many rebounds.

For CCBC – Catonsville, Fogel produced a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards, while adding two steals. Sophomore forward Serafina Stubbs finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Bell tallied 11 points, five caroms, and a trio of steals. Freshman guard Unique Santiago had a solid game off the bench with a team-high seven assists, while gathering six rebounds and collecting three steals.
