THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 13 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned its seventh straight victory by defeating Region 15 opponent Suffolk County Community College, 67-48, at Monsignor Scanlan Gym on Tuesday evening.
Monroe advances to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the region. The Sharks fall to 2-3 for the season and 1-3 against regional opponents.
Suffolk County had a brief 3-0 lead early on, but the Express scored nine straight points, capped off by a layup courtesy of sophomore guard
Tymere Moorer, to give the Blue and Gold the lead for good less than five minutes into the contest. The first half was close as a layup by freshman forward Ashley Peralta of the Sharks with 27 ticks left before the break pulled her team to within 23-17 and that was the score at the intermission.
The third quarter was a different story as a 3-point field goal by freshman guard
Beverly Williams sparked a 10-0 run by the Express to give them a 16-point cushion just 4:15 into the stanza. The Express outscored the Sharks, 28-6, during the third period. Monroe ballooned its advantage to 31 (65-34) in the early stages of the fourth quarter before settling for the 67-48 victory.
"Suffolk County played hard from start to finish, and they played harder than us," Express Head Women's Basketball Coach
Damel Ling said. "We picked it up in the third quarter. We were more disciplined defensively and that allowed us to create separation."
Sophomore forward
Makira Bunsie had a huge game for the Express as she scored 12 points and grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds, including 16 offensive boards. She also blocked two shots. Freshman guard
Beverly Williams generated 16 points, five assists, four steals, and three rebounds.
Moorer added 11 points, six boards, and four steals for the Express. Second-year guard
Davian Myers snatched 10 caroms, while classmate
Tiffany Newsome provided nine points, three rebounds, and two steals. Rookie guard
Salimah Williams netted eight points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out just as many steals, and forced five steals.
For Suffolk County, freshman guard Aryanna Zito tallied 11 points, a trio of rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Peralta recorded nine points, five boards, and two blocks off the bench. Sophomore guard Nathalia Minchala scored seven points, clutched eight caroms, and delivered three assists.
No. 13 Monroe – Bronx will battle nationally ranked No. 8 Hostos Community College, at The Swamp, on Tuesday evening, December 3. The Region 15 game featuring nationally ranked opponents is set for 6:00 p.m.
"We have had a good stretch, and this mini break will allow us to regroup and hopefully enable us to finish the semester on a strong note," Ling said.
