POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 14 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team notched another Region 15 victory on Saturday afternoon as they routed Dutchess Community College by a score of 87-38 at Falcon Gymnasium. The Express are a perfect 4-0 in the region and 7-2 overall. The Falcons drop to 1-5 in both Region 15 and for the season.
Monroe led from wire to wire and limited Dutchess to just 35.3% shooting from the field. The Express' strong defense held the Falcons to just 13 points in the opening half.
"We played with a great amount of energy today," Express Head Women's Basketball Coach
Damel Ling said. "We came out like good teams do, being committed to defending and rebounding. Everything we did today was generated from strong defense and getting the rebounds."
Leading the way for the Express was sophomore forward
Makira Bunsie who tallied a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while dishing out four assists and forcing three steals. Classmate
Tiffany Newsome had another strong game with 18 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Freshman guard
Beverly Williams provided 10 points, four steals, just as many helpers, and two rebounds.
Also helping Monroe were freshman guards
Salimah Williams and
Amira McCleod who generated 12 points and four rebounds each, with the former dishing out seven assists and gathering six steals. Sophomore guard
Tymere Moorer contributed with eight points, a team-high 11 rebounds, six steals, and four assists.
For Dutchess, freshman Eva Bertiz had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while blocking four shots, distributing two assists, and collecting a pair of steals. Rookie Melody Sanchez netted 10 points and clutched two caroms.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Express as they will host NJCAA Division II Community College of Baltimore County – Catonsville, at Monsignor Scanlan Gym, on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
