Devariste's First Collegiate Goal Not Enough For No. 6 Express Men's Soccer Against No. 5 Nassau

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 6 Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team dropped its Region 15 match to nationally ranked No. 5 Nassau Community College, 5-1, at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
 
Monroe – Bronx drops to 8-2-1 overall and snaps its five-match unbeaten streak. Nassau remains in first place in the regional standings, now sporting a record of 7-0-2 in the region and 9-1-2 for the season.
 
The Lions scored four goals in the opening half and then extended their lead to 5-0 during the second stanza. 
 
Monroe finally got on the board in the 67th minute, thanks to sophomore defender Clermens Devariste burying his first collegiate goal. It was not enough for Monroe as Nassau earned the Region 15 victory to remain undefeated against regional opponents.
 
Nassau had the advantage in shots during the afternoon, 14-12, including 8-4 in shots on goal. The Express had the edge in corner kicks, 4-2.
 
In goal, freshman goalkeeper Raymond Romero made three saves for the Express. Rookie goalkeeper Ford Balde stopped three shots to earn the win for the Lions.
 
Sophomore forward Marc Augustin scored three goals for Nassau, including the match-winner in the 19th minute. Classmate Marco Russo buried a pair of goals of his own. 
 
Monroe – Bronx will host Dutchess Community College, in a Region 15 match at Flowers Park, on Tuesday afternoon. The action begins at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the match, Monroe University will honor 10 Express men's soccer sophomores with a Sophomore Day Ceremony. 
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
