THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team dropped its Region 15 contest to Kingsborough Community College, 79-68, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
Monroe – Bronx (10-8, 7-3 Region 15) was led by freshman guard
Daysiah Smith who scored 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, while forcing a game-high nine steals, grabbing seven rebounds, and dishing out three assists.
Rookie guard
Angeleny Cobos was also productive for the Express as she notched 12 points, collected three steals, snatched three boards, and delivered a pair of assists. Classmate
Tiffany Newsome had a near double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while dishing out three assists and picking up two steals. Freshman forward
Da'Mya Cheatham grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and delivered three assists.
The key of the game was the free-throw shooting. The Wave (13-2, 11 -2 Region 15) went 24-for-45 from the line, while the Express only had 17 attempts and converted nine of them. The Blue and Gold also committed 53 turnovers and Kingsborough scored 47 points off of those miscues. The Wave had 35 turnovers during the contest.

Tiffany Newsome that capped off seven unanswered points and put the Express in front, 14-13, with 3:14 left in the opening period. Kingsborough scored the next four points to go back ahead. Later in the stanza, a triple by Cobos pulled the Express to within one, at 19-18, with 23 ticks left on the clock.
The Wave finished the quarter strong as rookie guard Jayden Vega converted a layup while being fouled with eight seconds remaining. She added the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play and inflate the visiting team's lead to 22-18 which was the score after 10 minutes of play.
Both teams exchanged baskets throughout the majority of the second quarter. Kingsborough led by as many as seven, but the Express were able to rally and pull to within three, thanks to a layup by Smith with 1:56 to go before the break. The Wave countered with three unanswered points to finish the half, all courtesy of free throws from rookie forward Tionna Davis, to send them to the locker room with a 33-27 benefit.
Kingsborough took complete control of the game by outscoring Monroe, 20-2, during the first five minutes of the second half to take a commanding 53-29 hold. In the closing seconds of the stanza, freshman guard Taima Flores buried a jumper to give her team its largest lead of the night, at 65-39, after 30 minutes of play.
Monroe – Bronx did not go down without a fight as a layup by Smith concluded a 20-4 to shrink the Express' disadvantage to 69-59 with 4:36 left in the period. However, the Wave scored six of the game's next eight points to regain control of the game, on their way to the 79-68 victory.
For the Express, sophomore forward
Xing Stewart-Greer and rookie guard
Tymere Moorer each grabbed six rebounds and scored two points, with the latter registering two assists and just as many steals.
For the Wave, Davis had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while delivering six assists and having just as many steals. Vega scored a game-high 30 points. Freshman guard Kayla Wilson snatched 12 boards, netted eight points, forced six steals, and distributed four assists.
Monroe – Bronx will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on nationally ranked No. 6 Onondaga Community College. Tipoff at Allyn Hall Gymnasium will take place on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
