THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 14 Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team picked up a convincing victory over NJCAA Division II Ulster County Community College, 72-57, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Sunday, January 14. Monroe advances to 8-6 for the season, while the Senators drop to 5-7.
The Express fell behind by nine in the early stages of the game but rallied with 24 unanswered points to take the lead for good on their way to the decisive victory.

Daysiah Smith had a very productive afternoon for the Express, scoring 32 points which ties a career high, and shot 15-for-24 (62.5%) from the field in the process, while forcing eight steals, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out five assists, and blocking one shot.

Tiffany Newsome also had a big game for Monroe – Bronx by netting seven points, snatching 11 boards, delivering seven assists, and collecting six steals.
The Express scored 32 points off turnovers during the contest.
Monroe – Bronx got off to a sluggish start in the game, falling behind 10-1, 4:10 in. The Express turned it around as a 3-pointer by freshman guard
Angeleny Cobos began a run of 18 unanswered points for the home team to close out the quarter.
During that stretch, Smith forced a steal and then converted a fast-break layup to tie the game at 10. Then the home team took the lead for good when freshman guard
Davian Myers grabbed an offensive rebound and tipped the ball into the hoop to put Monroe in front 12-10, with 2:16 remaining in the opening period. Freshman forward
Da'Mya Cheatham put the cap on the quarter by snatching an offensive board and providing a putback basket at the buzzer to inflate the Express' benefit to 19-10.
Monroe's blitz carried over into the second quarter by scoring the first six points of the stanza, thanks to back-to-back buckets by Smith and then a layup from second-year forward
Xing Stewart-Greer, to give the Blue and Gold a commanding 25-10 hold with 8:24 left to play in the half. That concluded a run of 24 unanswered points by the Express as their defense held the opposition scoreless for a total time of 7:46.
The home team took a 40-19 score into the intermission and then led by double digits throughout the second half, including a 30-point advantage late in the third quarter. When the final buzzer went off, the Express were bestowed their second victory against an NJCAA Division II opponent this season.

Tymere Moorer each finished with eight points, with the latter snatching four rebounds and the former securing two caroms. Stewart-Greer secured seven rebounds. Rookie guard
Leanna Morales provided seven points, three assists, and a pair of steals. Freshman forward
Arlene Corona brought down eight rebounds coming off the bench. Rookie guard
Davian Myers grabbed six boards, while first-year forward
Moryliz Marquez added four rebounds of her own. Freshman guard
Jah Gunter tallied six rebounds and three assists, while Cheatham had four points and just as many boards.
Monroe – Bronx will battle Borough of Manhattan Community College, in a Region 15 contest, on Tuesday, January 16. Tipoff on the campus of BMCC is set for 5:00 p.m.
