NEW YORK - The Monroe College - Bronx men's soccer team dropped its first road match of the season by a 2-0 score to Region 15 rival Borough of Manhattan Community College, at Pier 40, on Thursday afternoon, September 7.
Leading the way for the Express (0-2, 0-2 Region 15) was rookie goalkeeper
Krit Raj Maharjan who made eight saves during the afternoon.
However, BMCC (2-0, 2-0 Region 15) would net two goals during the contest. The first was off a penalty kick by sophomore forward Ademola Opesanwo, for his third tally of the season, during the 29th minute. That not only put the Panthers on the board, but served as the official match-winning goal. Opesanwo helped set up BMCC's second goal, during the 38th minute. He had a corner kick opportunity and drilled the ball into the box that was redirected off the head of freshman midfielder Nanga Adam Coulibaly and into the back of the net to pad Borough of Manhattan's lead to 2-0.Â
Monroe's defense held the opposition scoreless during the second half, but it was too little too late as the Panthers secured their second Region 15 shutout victory of the season.Â
During the contest, BMCC had the decisive advantage in shots, 26-5, and produced a 6-0 benefit in corner kick opportunities.
For Monroe - Bronx, sophomore midfielder
Khwezi Gema led the attack with two shots, while second-year defender
James Gallagher, rookie midfielder
Mahmodu Trawally, and sophomore defenderÂ
Abdoulaye Soumare each added a shot of their own.
For BMCC, sophomore goalkeeper Abdul Mumin Seidu earned the shutout victory in between the posts.Â
The Express will head to Middletown, N.Y., on Tuesday, September 12, for a Region 15 matchup with Orange Country Community College. The action at Chris Chachis Soccer Field will begin at 4:00 p.m.
