Nunez's Strong Defensive Effort Leads No. 10 Express Women's Volleyball to Key Region 15 Win Over Nassau

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 10 Monroe College - Bronx women's volleyball team earned a key NJCAA Region 15 victory on the road over Nassau Community College, in straight sets, at Nassau CC Main Gym on Thursday evening, September 21. Set scores were 25-20, 25-14, and 25-21. Monroe - Bronx remains undefeated in Region 15 play at 4-0 and advances its overall record to 9-1.

Leading the way for the Express was sophomore libero Valery Nunez who anchored the defense with a season-high 24 digs. Second-year outside hitter Lisanel Rodriguez had a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs, while scoring three service aces. Sophomore setter Luisanni Rodriguez also tallied a double-double, as she recorded 24 assists and added 12 digs. She also slammed home two kills and nailed an ace.

Second-year outside hitter Selena Mitchell had a strong match for the Express with eight kills and seven digs, while adding a service ace. Classmate Haley Castaneda generated three kills and seven digs, while rookie middle blocker Chelsea Nolasco produced four kills, a dig, and an ace.

Freshman defensive specialist Yasmel Molina chipped in on defense for Monroe - Bronx with four digs, while sophomore right side hitter Lesly Almonte slammed home five kills. Sophomore middle blocker Xing Stewart Greer had two successful attacks, a service ace, and a block, while rookie middle blocker Maria Melendez successfully blocked the opposition's attack to score a point for the Express.

Monroe - Bronx will once again compete at Nassau CC Main Gym on Saturday, September 23, for a pair of Region 15 matches. The Express will battle Rockland Community College at 12:00 p.m. and then take on Westchester Community College at approximately 2:00 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
