RANDOLPH, NJ – Monroe Express softball began an extended road trip Saturday afternoon against the County College of Morris Titans, dropping their doubleheader unable to find their footing in the field. Game one ended with a score of 8-0, and game two with a score of 10-1, with both games ending in five innings. The Express fall to 0-14 with the pair of losses.
Game 1: Morris Titans 8, Monroe Express 0
The Express found themselves behind early against the Titans in their 8-0 loss in game one of the day's series, where they were unable to put a run on the board. County College of Morris took the lead on a single in the first inning.
County College of Morris got their offense going in the first inning, after Amber Curtis and Christie Puglis scored on a single to shallow left field hit by Julie Vervaet. A single by
Ashley Peralta in the fifth inning was a positive for the Express, which was their lone hit of the ball game.
Vervaet ended the game as the winning pitcher for the Titans. The pitcher surrendered zero runs on one hit over five innings, striking out 11.
Angelica Uribe took the loss for the Express, lasting three innings, allowing four hits and five runs while striking out two. Peralta went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead Monroe in hits.
County College of Morris scattered ten hits in the game, as Vervaet led with three hits in three at bats. The Titans were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Megan Tinger made the most plays with 11.
Game 2: Morris Titans 10, Monroe Express 1
In game two of today's series, the Express had a tough time generating runs, dropping their contest with County College of Morris, 10-1.
In the first inning, the Titans got things going after Puglis grounded out, scoring one run. In the top of the second inning, the Express tied things up at one when
Thiare Sanchez scored a run after
Jahemy Roman grounded out.Â
County College of Morris pulled away for good with seven runs in the third inning. In the stanza, Puglis singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run and DiGuiseppi singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run and an error scored one run as well. The big play in the period came when Tinger homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.
Kelly Sesnick led County College of Morris to victory in the circle, as the ace went five innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out two and walking zero.
Emily Velez took the loss for the Express. The pitcher went four innings, allowing ten runs on nine hits and striking out four.
Thiare Sanchez went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Monroe in hits.
County College of Morris racked up nine hits in the game. DiGuiseppi, Paseler and Tinger each had two hits in the game. The Titans were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error, while Vervaet had the most chances in the field with ten.
The Express continue their extended road trip on Tuesday, April 11th for a non-conference doubleheader against the Orange County Community College Colts inside Mary B. Diana Softball Field in Middletown, NY. First pitch is at 3 PM.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
