Express Pick Up Their Offense in Battle at SUNY Orange

The Express return to the field Saturday, April 15th on the road against Community College of Rhodes Island

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIDDLETOWN, NY – Monroe Express softball found their offensive footing Tuesday afternoon in their doubleheader against the Orange County Community College, but were unable to move into the winning column, dropping their games, 10-6 and 12-6, in seven innings inside Mary B. Diana Softball Field. The Express fall to 0-16 with the pair of losses. 

Game 1: Orange Colts 10, Monroe Express 6

The Express found themselves behind early, and had to play from behind in their game loss to the Colts. 

Monroe got things moving in the first inning, when Thiare Sanchez singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Orange followed up with a home run by Dawn Grover in the second inning, and a home run by Chloe Jamieson in the same period. 

Back to back homers for the Colts saw Monroe trailing by four, but the Express tallied two runs in the top of the third after Emily Velez scored after a ground ball to left field hit by Angelica Uribe, and Dulce Duran scored on an error.

Orange scored four runs in the third inning. Colt batters contributing to the big inning included Grover and Jillian Noteboom, who each had RBIs in the stanza.

Erin Feeney earned the victory in the pitcher's circle for the Colts as the ace allowed nine hits and six runs over seven innings, striking out eight.

Uribe was in the circle for the Express. She surrendered ten runs on 15 hits over six innings, striking out two.

Orange hit two home runs on the day, as Jamiesen and Grover each had a four-bagger in the second inning. 

The Express tallied nine hits in the game. Uribe and Caitlin Molina each collected two hits to lead Monroe. The Express were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Ashley Peralta had the most chances in the field with four.

The Colts had 15 hits in the game as Grover and Amanda Miller each collected three hits to lead Orange.

Game 2: Orange Colts 12, Monroe Express 6

In game two of the day's doubleheader, the Express ballooned their lead to six in the first, but was unable to hold on to the lead in the loss. The game was tied at six with Orange batting in the bottom of the fifth when an error scored one run for the home team.

Monroe got things moving in the first inning, when the blue and gold reached on an error and scored one run. After leading 4-0, Gabriella Cid and Uribe scored when Herleen Castillo doubled on a hit to right field to increase their lead to six. Orange began their scoring in the second, after Grover slapped an inside the park home run, driving in two. 

The Colts knotted the game up at six in the bottom of the third inning, when Velez's wild pitch allowed one run to score for Orange. Monroe found themselves trailing in the fifth, as the Colts put the game away off a home run hit by Chloe Jasmieson that drove in three players, and extended their lead to 12-6.

Despite the loss, Monroe did collect five hits in the high-scoring game. Unfortunately, Orange had nine hits in the victory.

Molly Martin led the Colts to victory on the mound. The hurler surrendered zero runs on two hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one.

Velez took the loss for the Express as the pitcher went three and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out three. Uribe threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Jessica Stewart started the game for Orange. Stewart lasted one-third of an inning, allowing three hits and six runs while walking zero.

The Colts tallied two home runs on the day, where Jamieson had a long ball in the fifth inning and Grover had a dinger in the first inning.

Castillo went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Monroe in hits. 

Of Orange's nine hits in the game, Grover, Martin, and Madison Brennan each collected two hits in the win.

The Express will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 15th for the beginning of a weekend of softball against the Community College of Rhode Island Knights in Warwick, RI. First pitch is slated for 12 PM.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
