Express Softball Drop Doubleheader at Home to CCRI

The Express hit the road Saturday, April 8th for a doubleheader against County College of Morris

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Monroe Express softball were unable to find their footing Friday afternoon at home to the Community College of Rhode Island Knights, dropping their doubleheader inside Flowers Park. Game one ended with a score of 20-3 and game two with a score of 14-1, both ending in five innings. The Express fall to 0-12 on the season after the losses.

Game 1: CCRI Knights 20, Monroe Express 3

The Express fell behind early in their 20-3 loss to CCRI in game one of their day's doubleheader. The Knights scored on a groundout by Hanna Deas and a single by Jenna Medeiros in the first inning.

CCRI got things started in the first stanza, after Deas grounded out, scoring one run after Ashley Klingberg passed home plate. Some time later, the Knights scored nine runs in the third inning, where Deas, Klingberg, Medeiros, Emily Gil, Casey Regine and Lucie Willett all drove in runs in the frame. 

The Express got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after Emely Valez crossed home plate after a fly ball hit to right field by Dulce Duran. In the same period, Jahemy Roman scored, after Caitlin Molina reached on an error by Regine. In the final moments of the game, Adalianys Guzman slapped a huge triple, allowing Duran to score the third run for the Express.

Victoria Butler led the Knights to victory in the circle. The pitcher surrendered three runs on six hits over five innings, striking out three and walking one.

Hilda Sanchez took the loss on the mound for the Express. The hurler lasted two and a third innings, allowing 12 hits and 11 runs while striking out three. Angelica Uribe threw two and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Monroe scattered six hits in the game with Guzman and Duran each collected two hits for the Express. 

CCRI Island racked up 17 hits in the first half of the day's series, with four Knights registering three hits in the game. Klingberg led the Knights with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with six stolen bases.

Game 2: CCRI Knights, Monroe Express 1

In game two of today's doubleheader, the Express were unable to gain an advantage over CCRI, losing 14-1. The Knights scored on a home run by Klingberg, a single by Willett, and an error during Medeiros's at bat in the first inning.

In the opening stretch, CCRI got their offense started when Klingberg hit a solo homer. The Knights followed with four runs in the fourth as they're offense in the inning was led by Medeiros, Gil, and Abby Pinault, all driving in runs in the inning.

Samantha Marsella earned the victory for the Knights. The ace lasted five innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out one and walking one.

Emily Velez led things off in the middle for Monroe as the pitcher went five innings, allowing 14 runs on 12 hits and striking out two.
CCRI hit two home runs on the day. KlIngberg put one out in the first inning and Regine went deep in the third inning.

Monroe totaled five hits in the ball game, with Duran, Roman, Uribe, Velez, Jahemy, and Thiare Sanchez each collecting one hit to lead the Express.

The Knights scattered 12 hits in the game. KlIngberg led CCRI with three hits in four at bats.

The Express begin a lengthy road trip on Saturday, April 8th with a non-conference doubleheader against the County College of Morris in Randolph, NJ. First pitch is slated for 12 PM.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
