Pitching Proves Big as Express Edge Queensborough

The Monroe College Express baseball team won a tight contest Thursday, as they defeated Queensborough Community College, 6-4 at Kingsborough Community College. With the win, the Express improve to 22-18 on the season, and 10-7 in conference play.
 
The Express dented the scoreboard right away, as Ernie Farrell drove in Gregory Espinal with an RBI single to left field in the first. After swiping his second stolen base of the game, Espinal scored again in the second inning on an RBI single by Hecxiel Perez, making it a 2-0 ballgame.
The Express padded their lead in the fourth inning, when Diego Moran doubled to center. Bryant Quezada then singled and immediately stole second base. Randy Diaz then followed with the big hit of the inning, lining a two-run triple to right field, making it a 4-0 lead for the Express. They added another run in the sixth when Camilo Rodriguez scored on an error.
The Tigers fought back with back-to-back two-run innings in the sixth and seventh. Alvarez's two-run home run in the seventh made it a 5-4 ball game.
An error in the eighth allowed for the sixth run of the day for the Express, as they went on to win the ballgame. The Express tallied 15 hits on the day, with Diaz leading the way.
David Pena took the hill for the Express, holding the Tigers hitless through the first four frames before surrendering a one-out single in the fifth. The right-hander finished the day going five innings with two earned runs allowed to earn his fourth win of the season. Emmanuel Aviles and Tyler Cadena came on in relief. Cadena pitching the last 2.2 innings to earn his fourth save of the year. With the performance, the Express closer also improved his conference ERA to 0.86, and 1.42 overall.
The Express will close out the series against Queensborough on Friday, April 28, in a doubleheader hosted at Kingsborough. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
