Express Fend Off Bronx Late in Home Victory

The Express hit the road on Wednesday, April 19th to take on Sussex County Community College

BRONX, NY – Monroe Express baseball returned to home field to host city rival the Bronx Community College Broncos for a Region 15 stint that saw the Express take the victory, 10-8, inside Roberto Clemente State Park. The Express improve to 17-15, and 6-5 in Region 15 play.

The Express built a six-run lead in the sixth inning and then held off Bronx's charge for a 10-8 victory in nine innings. The Broncos scored four runs in the failed comeback on a single by Steven Correa in the seventh, a double by Albel Ruan in the ninth, and a double by Correa In the ninth.

Monroe fired up the offense in the second inning, when Imanol Ramos drew a walk, scoring one run. In the third, Randy Diaz scored after Ian Faulkner reached on an error. Bronx evened things up at two in the top of the fourth, when Ruan drove in two when he singled.

The Express pulled away for good with three runs in the fifth inning. In the period, Camilo Rodriguez singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run and Ramos doubled on a 3-1 count, scoring two runs. The blue and gold followed this up with three runs in the sixth. Ernie Farrell, Faulkner, and Jabez King all drove in runs in the frame.

Bronx scored three runs in the ninth in an effort to shrink the deficit and take the lead when Ruan and Correa each drove in runs during the inning. The Broncos were unable to get closer in the runs column, cementing the Express victory.

Adrian Quezada was the winning pitcher for Monroe. Quezada allowed six hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking zero. Frank Ballar and Tyler Cadena entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Cadena recorded the last two outs to earn the save for the Express.

Alex Messon took the loss for Bronx. Messon surrendered eight runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out four.

Monroe totaled 10 hits. Diaz, Faulkner, Ramos, Farrell, and Rodriguez each collected two hits to lead the Express.

The Broncos tallied eight hits in the game as Correa went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Bronx in hits.

The Express make a quick stop west, to take on the Sussex County Community College Skylanders in non-conference action in Newton, NJ. First pitch will be at 4 PM.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
