Fifth Inning Rally Pushes Express to Late Game Victory in Split Against Cecil College

The Express return to Maryland on Sunday (Mar. 12) for a doubleheader against Anne Arundel

NORTH EAST, MD – After a sweep in their contests this past Sunday, Monroe Express baseball hit the road for a noon doubleheader against DII Cecil College Seahawks, splitting the day's matchup taking game one, 12-9, and dropping game two, 14-8. The Express are now 4-6 on the season, and the Seahawks now sit at 4-8.

Monroe Express 12, Cecil Seahawks 9

In game one of their Thursday afternoon doubleheader, Monroe Express baseball took the lead late and defeated Cecil College 12-9. The game was tied at nine with the Express batting in the top of the sixth when Camilo Rodriguez singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.

Monroe earned the victory despite allowing the Seahawks to score five runs in the first inning.  Lane Weismiller, Garrett Worthington, and Evan Slaybaugh powered the big inning with RBIs.

Cecil College got on the board in the first inning, scoring one run on a stolen base. Monroe evened things up at nine in the top of the fifth inning, including an Antwon Beverly RBI after a double to left field.

Putting up nine runs in the fifth inning, Express batters contributing to the big inning included Randy Diaz, Ernie Farrell, Ruben Ogando, Ramsel Jerez, and Beverly and Rodriguez, who all drove in runs.

Nate Ewing started the game for Cecil College, with the hurler lasting four innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out six and walking zero. Miguel Polanco started the game for the Express. The bulldog went one-third of an inning, allowing five runs on zero hits and striking out one.

Luis Lopez was the winning pitcher for Monroe, where he allowed one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out three and walking zero. Alex Bello-Rodriguez threw three and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Jayden Meregildo took the loss for Cecil College. The bulldog allowed four hits and five runs over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one.

Monroe saw the ball well today, racking up ten hits in the game. Rodriguez, Farrell, and Jerez each collected multiple hits for the Express. Jerez, Farrell, and Rodriguez each managed two hits to lead the winning effort.

Justin Cordero led Cecil College with two hits in three at bats. Cecil College didn't commit a single error in the field. Garrett Worthington had ten chances in the field, the most on the team.

Cecil Seahawks 14, Monroe Express 8

Monroe stayed in it until the end, but Cecil College pulled away late in a 14-8 victory in their second meeting of the day. The game was tied at eight with the Seahawks batting in the bottom of the fifth when Wade Little singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

In the second inning, Cecil College got their offense started when Kevin Gamber drove in one when he doubled. Hecxiel Perez drove in four runners in the loss off two home runs in the fifth.

Joel Blanco led the Seahawks to victory on the mound. The fireballer allowed one hit and zero runs over two and a third innings, striking out six.

Tyler Cadena took the loss for the Express where the hurler lasted one and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out one and walking one.

Starting the game for Cecil was Gehris Harsh, as the bulldog went four and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs on 13 hits, striking out four and walking zero. Emmanuel Aviles started the game for Monroe, lasting one and one-third innings, allowing four hits and six runs while striking out one and walking one. The blue and gold tallied two home runs on the day, claimed by Perez who had a long ball in the fifth inning.

The Express scattered 14 hits in the game highlighted by Perez, Diaz, Farrell, Nasir Useini who each managed multiple hits in the loss. Diaz and Perez each managed three hits to lead Monroe.

Little led Cecil College with three hits in three at bats and the Seahawks didn't commit a single error in the field. Patrick O'Brien had ten chances in the field, the most on the team.

The Express once again head down to Maryland on Sunday (Mar. 12) as they look to come out in full force against the Anne Arundel Community College Riverhawks in a matinee doubleheader at 'Skip' Brown Baseball Field in Arnold, MD. First pitch is at 12 PM.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
