BROOKLYN, NY – After playing in their first contest in over two weeks, and receiving a quarter final bye, #2 Express women's basketball did not lose a step, taking down the #4 seed Suffolk County Community College Sharks in convincing fashion, 63-24, in the semifinals of the Region 15 Championship Tournament. With this victory, the Express advance to the final round of the tournament, awaiting the winner of the #2/#3 matchup.
It was a balanced offensive attack by the Express, with
Janay Legagneur leading all scorers with 14 points along with five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal.
Aleah James was closely behind with 13 points, four assists and one rebound.
Maria Negron came in with 10 points, five rebounds, two blocks and one assist.
Nyeira Spady pulled down rebounds, with three assists, two blocks and two steals while
Taina Maldonado grabbed eight rebounds of her own with three assists and two steals.
The Express took care of business in the second round, and will now head to the Region 15 Championship Finals to defend their crown against the winner of the #3/#6 seed matchup on Sunday (Mar. 5) inside Kingsborough Community College Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
