Express’ Seven Run Second Inning Sparks Victory Over Nassau

The Express open at home Saturday (Mar. 25) against Nassau

GARDEN CITY, NY – In their second of the three matchups this week, Monroe Express baseball returned to Garden City Friday afternoon in a nail-biting road victory against the Nassau Community College Lions inside Eisenhower Park. In nine innings, Monroe claimed the game, 10-9, after a near Lions comeback. The Express' record improves to 7-9 with the win.

Despite seeing its six-run lead whittled down by the end, the Express managed to hold off Nassau for a 10-9 victory Friday afternoon. The Lions scored five runs in the failed comeback on a double by Tyler Schubert in the eighth, a double by Julio Lizardo in the eighth, a walk by Schubert in the ninth, and a score by John Flood in the ninth.

Monroe was boosted by Ernie Farrell who went 4-for-5 at the plate, where he homered in the second and fifth, singled in the sixth, and doubled in the eighth. The blue and gold pulled away for good with seven runs in the second inning. In the second, Ruben Ogando singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run, Ramsel Jerez singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, and Randy Diaz singled on a 3-1 count, scoring two runs.

Nassau had a substantial inning in the eighth, scoring three runs in the period. The big act for the Lions came thanks to doubles by Schubert and Lizardo.

Samuel Tejada pitched the Express to victory, as the reliever surrendered four runs on six hits over five innings, striking out two. Luis Lopez, Didier Hernandez, and Tyler Cadena all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory. Hernandez recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Monroe.

For the Lions, Peric took the loss going five innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits and striking out seven.

The Express tallied two home runs on the day, claimed by Farrell who put one out in the second and fifth innings. In addition, Monroe racked up 13 hits on the day. Camilo Rodriguez, Farrell, Ogando and Diaz all managed multiple hits in the stint. Farrell went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Express in hits.

On the contrary, for Nassau, Thomas Kelly, James Reilly, Schubert, and Lizardo each racked up multiple hits totaling 12 for the ball game.

The Express open at home Saturday (Mar. 25) in a doubleheader against the Nassau Community College Lions inside Flowers Park in New Rochelle, NY. First pitch is slated for 2:30 PM.

There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
