NEW ROCHELLE, NY – #2 Monroe Express men's basketball entered the Monroe Athletic Complex with a vengeance Tuesday evening, with a statement victory in their Region 15 championship quarterfinal matchup against the #7 seeded Suffolk County Community College Sharks, defeating the visitors 86-45. With the victory, the Express advance to the semifinal round, taking on the winner of the of the #3/#6 bout.
Following the Action
- Andrew Molina got the game going with two straight 3-pointers to give Monroe an early advantage.
- Abubakar Kromah gave the Express their first double digit lead of the contest, after finishing a layup after a long rebound.
- In the final moments of the first half, Vashaun Wallace swiped a Joshua Fenner miscue, followed by a long 3-point bomb from Jovan Young as the clock struck zero.
- Leading 46-22, Young got the second period started after he got to the rim for an easy bucket.
- Angel Duran knocked down a shot from downtown in an attempt to cut into the lead, but the Express would continue to answer.
- At the 4:30 mark, Molina would sink a barrage of jumpers, including two 3-pointers, to increase the Express lead to 43 points.
- Following a Jaream Eason layup, Monroe would close the game out and cruise to an 86-45 final.
- Molina led all scorers with 20 points, along with five rebounds. Oramis Figuereo followed with 16 points, five rebounds and one steal. Kromah added 12 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
With their victory, #2 seed Express take to Kingsborough Community College Gymnasium Saturday (Mar. 4) for the Region 15 Championship semifinals, where they will meet the winner of the #3/#6 seed matchup. Their opponents will be announced shortly.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
