Box Score WARWICK, RI – In their final regular season matchup Friday evening, #8 Monroe Express women's basketball downed #4 Community College of Rhode Island Knights in dramatic fashion after
Ariella Johnson hit a layup at the buzzer for the 62-60 win. The Express improve to 22-7 with the victory, and their winning streak improves to nine, while the Knights fall to 19-6.
After the victory, Coach Thompson praised his team:
"We were down a few players today but I have the utmost faith in this whole team and we went nine deep. This team refuses to give up, never backs down from a challenge and has absolutely no fear. That's what you saw tonight against a great CCRI team."
In the end, both
Aleah James and
Janay Legagneur poured in 17 points, while James added five rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Legagneur added three rebounds.
Nyeira Spady contributed eight points, four rebounds and two steals.
Ariella Johnson pitched in seven points, two assists and two rebounds, including the game-winning layup at the buzzer.
The Express concluded their regular season Friday evening, and will travel to Kingsborough Community College on Saturday (Mar. 4) to begin their run in the Region 15 playoffs in the semi-final round as the #1 seed.Â
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
