THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 10 Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team suffered a Region 15 loss to Hostos Community College, 68-55, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Tuesday, December 5. It marks the first Region 15 loss for the defending two-time Region 15 Champions since February 18, 2020, and snaps a 25-game regular season winning streak in region play.
Monroe (6-6, 5-1 Region 15) had a 27-25 lead at the half, but Hostos (5-2, 3-1 Region 15) outscored the Express, 43-28, during the final 20 minutes of regulation play to secure the regional win.
Leading the way for the Express was freshman guard
Daysiah Smith who scored 15 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out just as many assists, and forced four steals. Sophomore forward
Kristina Poitier-Wells had a near double-double with 11 points and nine boards, while blocking three shots.
Freshman guard
Tymere Moorer produced 12 points and seven rebounds for the Blue and Gold, while classmate
Tiffany Newsome secured a team-high 13 rebounds. Rookie guard
Jah Gunter snatched seven caroms, scored four points, and collected a pair of steals. Freshman guard
Davian Myers had eight rebounds of her own.
In the second quarter of the contest, Monroe – Bronx trailed by six (22-16) with 6:35 remaining in the half. Shortly after Monroe scored the next point, Moorer drained a triple that got the Express even closer at 22-20 with 5:08 left. A few possessions later, Moorer converted a layup to tie the game at 22.
With the score now 25-23 in favor of the Caimans, Smith fed the ball to Myers who swished a jumper to once again even up the game with 2:11 left in the half. A couple of possessions later, Moorer deflected the ball off an opposing pass attempt that was picked up by Smith who passed it back to Moorer who finished the transition with a fast-break layup to give the Express a 27-25 benefit with 1:19 remaining. That would be the score after 20 minutes of play.
Hostos came flying out of the gate in the third quarter, opening the period with a 13-3 run to jump out to a commanding 38-30 hold with 2:40 remaining in the stanza and completely taking over the game. The Express managed to slice the deficit in half before by the end of the quarter.
Once again though, Hostos started a frame off strong, this time by scoring seven unanswered points to begin the fourth quarter to take a commanding 45-34 hold just 1:06 into the final period of regulation play. The Express could not generate a consistent run to get back into the game as the Caimans led by as many as 18 on their way to the 68-55 victory.
For Hostos, sophomore forward Demaris Andrew tallied a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, while dishing out three assists. Freshman guard Vanecia Brown provided 18 points, five boards, three assists, and just as many steals.
Monroe will battle Sussex County Community College, out in New Jersey, on Thursday, December 7. Tipoff at Sussex CC Gymnasium is set for 5:00 p.m.
