NEWTON, N.J. – The nationally ranked No. 10 Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team bounced back to earn a convincing victory on the road over Sussex County Community College, 64-39, at Sussex County CC Gymnasium on Thursday, December 7.
The Express (7-5) led the game from wire-to-wire.
Leading the way for Monroe – Bronx was freshman guard
Daysiah Smith who came off the bench and had a near triple-double with a game-high 22 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. She forced five steals and shots 51.7% from both the field (8-for-14) and from 3-point range (4-for-7).
"It feels good," Smith said. "Tonight, we had a way better basketball game because of the team. Overall, I feel that this has been our best game of the season so far as a team."
The game was close for the majority the first quarter, but a 3-point field goal by freshman guard
Tymere Moorer gave the Express a 10-6 advantage with 1:58 to go which began a 7-0 Monroe run to end the quarter and give the Blue a Gold a 14-6 hold after 10 minutes of play.
After Sussex (2-6) opened the scoring in the second stanza, Monroe – Bronx busted the game open with 10 unanswered points in a span of 2:14, capped off by a successful jump shot by freshman guard
Leanna Morales, to give the Express a commanding 18-8 advantage with 7:38 remaining before the break.
Monroe eventually inflated its lead all the way up to 29 (46-17) during the early stages of the third quarter. The Express eventually went on to win the contest by a score of 64-39.
For Monroe – Bronx, Moorer had eight points and six rebounds. Rookie guard
Jah Gunter tallied seven points, five boards, and just as many steals. Morales had a solid game with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Also helping Monroe was freshman guard
Davian Myers who registered six points, six caroms, and a duo of assists. Rookie forward
Da'Mya Cheatham snatched six rebounds and scored four points. Sophomore forward
Kristina Poitier-Wells netted six points, secured six boards, and forced a trio of steals.
Monroe – Bronx will be off for the next month but will return to action on January 9 with a Region 15 contest against Queensborough Community College. Tipoff at RFK Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
